Palermo traces its roots to 1806, when it was first settled by Lawrence Hagar and known for a time as Hagerstown. At its peak in the early 1920s, the village had around 30 houses, a school, a community hall, a sawmill, two general stores, two churches, and a factory — a genuinely self-contained rural community. Today, the Palermo United Church at 2521 Dundas Street West, the Palermo cemetery on the south side of Dundas Street at Bronte Road, and a handful of historic homes along Bronte Road are what remain of that original village.
New growth on a historic footprint. Modern Palermo West is a rapidly growing, family-friendly community, with newer homes generally more custom-styled than a typical subdivision — brick, stone, and stucco exteriors are common. Being newer and lower-density than Oakville's established core, Palermo West is served by Oakville Transit's Ride On-Demand microtransit zone rather than fixed conventional routes alone. Dundas Street West is the main commercial corridor, with the 407 and Neyagawa Boulevard providing regional access for drivers.
